The Apparel Product Developer manages all aspects of product development for assigned apparel area and spearheads execution of development processes. This role collaborates cross-functionally to ensure garments meet consumer needs throughout the design, development, testing, and sampling phases. The Product Developer manages the sourcing agents with regards to styling, component qualities, trims, graphics, wash techniques, etc. and ensures end result is delivered with required specifications within cost.

Job Requirements

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Manages product development activities from inception to final product. Partners cross-functionally with field resources and vendors/mills and ensures all go-to-market expectations are delivered within timeframes. Communicates with agents including product updates and requirements
  • Collaborates with merchants to align understanding of current and future customer trends, product costs, and margin goals. Creates lower-cost alternatives that uphold integrity of the intended product design
  • Leads the design and merchant teams through approvals of fabric, sketch, strike-off, and samples. Manages sample production & delivery with agent ensuring product milestones are met on time
  • Oversees and delegates product development activities as outlined in the go-to-market calendar; produces solutions as obstacles arise
  • Responsible for end-to-end cost engineering process including requests for quotes throughout the source base and negotiating services and timeframes with external partners
  • Educates field partners and vendors on all pre-production requirements, builds improved partner relationships
  • Delivers benchmark styles and cost targets to overseas partners
  • Anticipates competing demands to prioritize & delegate in order to maintain or expedite production schedules; approves milestone submittals (i.e. strike-offs, fabric swatches, pre-production samples, knit downs, etc.) and produces required acceptability guidance as needed to production teams
  • Approves final product placement and final cost with agent and communicates placement to merchants; oversees the handoff of adopted styles to necessary production teams
  • Performs supervisory functions, including but not limited to, making employment decisions regarding hiring, promoting, demoting and terminating, conducting performance appraisals and coaching and developing associates

Job Requirements & Skills:
  • Fluent in in apparel costing for designated product categories
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong knowledge of apparel and material construction, properties, manufacturing, and costing
  • Retail financial acumen
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to work with and influence at all levels
  • Excellent computer skills: MS office is a must, photo shop is a plus
  • Solution oriented
  • Advanced understanding of apparel development processes from inception through production
  • Adaptability to changing processes and work assignments while keeping all appropriate team members up to date. Must be able to interpret and communicate ideas and direction
