The role provides technical accounting counsel and support to Sears Holdings Corporation. Focus is on understanding accounting and reporting implications for significant, complex or uncommon transactions, as well as understanding ramifications of new accounting and reporting requirements. Will also assist with managing the preparation and distribution of financial statements for the corporation, ensuring all documentation complies with companies regulations and professional standards. This individual will work closely with the Controller, Asst. Controller and Senior Director of Accounting, as well as other Corporate accounting/finance functions.
  • Consultation and resolution of technical accounting matters arising from the business units and service lines across all segments of Sears Holdings Corporation. Significant areas of ad hoc technical accounting research include, but are not limited to, revenue recognition, real estate sales, sale leaseback transactions, lease accounting and business combinations.
  • Assist with completion of significant transactions (i.e., spin-offs, rights offerings, and sale-leaseback transactions), including research of technical accounting implications, preparation and review of related SEC filings (i.e., Form S-1, Form S-11), and managing the preparation, review and audit of carve-out financial statements.
  • Actively follow new accounting and reporting standards, and analyze and research new and emerging accounting requirements and their likely impact on the Company’s financial statements.
  • Development of accounting policies and leadership of internal communications, training and implementation relative to developments in US GAAP.
  • Assist in preparation and review of information included in earnings releases, annual reports on Form 10-K, quarterly reports on Form 10-Q, other SEC filings, and Audit Committee materials.
  • Provide support to external auditors during audits and interim reviews.
  • Lead the quarterly and annual impairment assessment of intangible and other long-lived assets.

Job Requirements

  • Position requires extensive accounting and financial reporting knowledge and experience
  • Must be current with respect to knowledge of accounting and reporting issues (FASB, SEC, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and research skills, including the ability to understand complex accounting rules as well as business structures and transactions
  • A high level of communication skills (oral and written) are necessary to communicate complex accounting issues to non-accounting personnel in an understandable, efficient manner
  • Financial analysis including knowledge of P&L and Business Performance Drivers
  • Expertise in Excel
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Minimum seven years of relevant experience; either public accounting (auditing public companies) or Fortune 500 financial reporting
  • CPA Required
