The Category Manager is responsible to drive profitable sales growth for their categories by achieving best in class category assortment and driving member consideration, purchase and loyalty to the category.

Job Requirements

Category Strategy and Assortment
  • Drive category online assortment strategy, planning, promotion and execution that delights members and delivers profitable sales growth.
  • Develop and manage online only assortments via Vendor Direct and Sears Marketplace that complement store assortment and support departmental strategic goals. Ensure merchandise offerings meet member needs and expectation.
  • Be the expert in category trends, vendors, opportunities. Attend relevant trade shows and monitor industry and market data. Understand product seasonality and life cycle and drive profitable growth accordingly. Prepare and present assortment and business reviews.
  • Build and maintain strong relationship with vendors. Negotiate the business relationship including prices, terms, transportation, distribution flow and product mix. Manage vendor performance to achieve growth targets. Drive and manage subsidy opportunities to support marketing and promotional efforts.
  • Develop and drive pricing and promotional strategy for the online platform. Leverage and integrate store promotional calendar strategy for online and cohesively incorporate online only assortment into those plans.
  • Supervise 1-2 team members, including but not limited to hiring, developing, directing and performance management.
P&L Responsibility
  • Own the category online P&L. Own annual planning and monthly forecasting, including submission through planning and forecasting tools.
  • Monitor performance vs plan to identify and close trend opportunities. Utilize online performance metrics to measure and communicate business performance and make data supported decisions.
  • Create and deliver ROIs/business cases for key category initiatives.
Cross-functional Leadership
  • Provide direction with vendors and operations content and item build teams leading to best in class content (e.g., images, descriptions, attributes). Drive actions across the organization to drive key online KPIs (e.g., traffic, conversion, AOV) for your categories.
  • Partner with store buying teams to understand store assortment, gaps and opportunities and to drive effective promotions.
  • Envision and advocate with online merchants, marketing and product management teams to drive best in class digital experience to members for your categories.

Skill/Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university, or four years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years related buying experience or 5-7 years with a mix of buying, planning, merchandising, online product management or online category management.
  • Strong merchandising, product, assortment management and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision making skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of desktop applications, windows-based programs including excel and enterprise applications.
  • Retail math literacy and financial forecasting and/or trend analysis experience.
