The Vice President General Merchandise Manager (VP/GMM) serves as the general manager for a major merchandising category of Sears Holdings (in this instance, Men's Apparel), working to drive the business in a way that serves customers needs and results in gains for the organization. The VP/GMM focuses on creating and executing both short-term and long-term merchandising strategies that fit with the overall retail brand, key customers, and company financial goals. The position is responsible for leading merchandising activities for Men's Apparel and providing leadership and direction to the buying staff and the teams across the company that support their business category.

This position reports directly to the President of Apparel & Footwear. The VP/GMM also partners closely with the Inventory Management, Marketing, Finance, Store Operations, and Customer Experience teams to develop and execute their business category plans.

Job Requirements

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning
• Incorporates customer insights, external competitive trends, retail format brand, and top-down direction to set the overall strategy for the business category.
• Anticipates market/business trends and pro-actively manages those trends to the benefit of the company.
• Develops both annual and longer-term strategic plans to manage and grow the business.
• Understands competitors' strengths, weaknesses and strategies and plans SHC response to them.

Business Performance / Financial Management
• Accountable for merchandise division performance, recommends revisions to the merchandise plan/forecast based on sound analysis and ensures corrective actions are implemented.

Product Design / Sourcing / Vendor Management
• Partners with the company design office on product offerings.
• Partners with the sourcing team on overseas production of product.
• Oversees/participates in market visits.
• Establishes and maintains effective vendor relationships and works with the buyers to strengthen market relationships and product and trend knowledge.

Assortment Planning
• Directs assortment selection process and reviews assortments for balance (brands, key items, core items, etc.) and adherence to strategic and financial objectives.
• Oversees and approves line reviews.
• Works with the planning organization to develop assortment plans that support overall strategy of in-stock positioning for key merchandise categories, classifications, items and vendors.
• Establishes collaborative relationships with placement to ensure availability and the timely delivery of merchandise.

Marketing
• Partners with marketing and customer experience to promotional and regular marketing strategies.
• Reviews and approves the promotional plans.

In-Store Execution
• Partners with Store Operations to drive in-store execution of the merchandising strategy taking in account store capabilities and responsibilities.

Team Leadership
• Resolves escalated buyer and associate buyer issues
• Leads team – pro-actively identifies and acquires new talent into the organization, coaches associates' performance, and develops associates for career advancement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Education/Training
• Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university or equivalent work experience; Master's preferred

Experience
• 10+ years related merchandising experience; a mix of buying, planning and placement responsibilities preferred
• Previous experience in Men's apparel preferred
• Previous experience with design processes and direct sourcing
• Previous leadership experience

Role specific abilities/skills
• Strong understanding of the retail industry and the merchandising process
• Strong financial acumen and analytic skills
• Proven experience meeting or exceeding plan; ability to manipulate the various levers in the merchandising process to manage the business and create positive results
