Senior Counsel – Retail Operations
Hoffman Estates, IL
Sears Holdings is looking for a creative attorney to join our legal team to support our retail operations and our transition to a nimble, digital-focused company centered on one question: How can we make our members’ lives better?
In this role you will join the Integrated Retail legal team that supports the day-to-day retail operations of our stores, websites, Shop Your Way member programs, and our marketing. You will be the main support for the Asset and Profit Protection business unit which implements margin improvement strategies in stores, online, and in our logistics facilities. Your work will focus on day-to-day questions surrounding internal and external theft, fraud, food safety, employee safety, customer safety, hazardous materials management, and retail related regulatory issues as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel for Integrated Retail.

Job Requirements

Your typical day may look something like this:
  • Meet with business leaders and learning development teams to discuss updating a safety policy
  • Review a contract with a supplier of electronic security devices
  • Call outside counsel to get their thoughts on an OSHA issue
  • Participate in a cross-functional call regarding security at one of our facilities
  • Grab a co-worker and head to the on-site cafeteria for lunch, or maybe go downstairs to the gym for a fitness class before grabbing a bite at the deli on your way back to your desk
  • Help decide next steps with an internal fraud investigation
  • Help resolve a customer complaint filed with our member services organization, Better Business Bureau, or a state Attorney General office, after reviewing relevant consumer protection laws and store policies
  • Brainstorm a law department process improvement with the Integrated Retail Team
We want you to succeed, so you need to be:
  • Adaptable, and eager to learn and do new things
  • Able to communicate (with brevity) complex legal issues to business partners
  • Comfortable with contracts
  • Experienced navigating state and local regulations
  • The kind of person who loves to look for ways to do things differently and better
  • A team player, willing to roll up your sleeves and help with any project
  • Client-focused – you are responsive and want to understand your client's needs and help them achieve their goals
  • A lawyer with at least 4 years of legal experience
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state in good standing, and able to gain admission to the Illinois Bar
You will also benefit from having some background in:
  • Loss prevention,
  • OSHA,
  • Retail operations,
  • Criminal justice, or
  • Risk management and general liability
So why should you join Sears? You will work with smart, passionate people, who genuinely want you to succeed and be happy. On the Integrated Retail Legal Team, when something comes along that's too big for any one of us to handle alone, we join up to get it done and help each other out. Our fast-paced and nimble culture means that people who can roll up their sleeves, do great work, and have a “how can we get this done” attitude will find plenty of room for expanded opportunities.
