This position provides environmental regulatory and compliance support for Sears Holdings Corporation business operations primarily in the State of Calirornia. The individual will visit each SHC facility in the state at the mazimum possible frequency, performing audits and assisting staff with the execution of their mandate to operate and maintain environmentally compliant facilities. The individual will develop, modify and implement specific policies and procedures designed to support compliance with environmental laws, working with all management levels at various types of facilities. The scope of compliance issues includes hazardous waste disposal, air permits, wastewater permits, spill protection, hazardous materials business plans and other compliance-related issues.

Job Requirements

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Visit each SHC facility in the state of California at the maximum possible frequency, performing audits and assisting staff in any way possible with execution of their mandate to operate clean, environmentally compliant facilities. Assistance includes “one-off” hazardous waste item removals, training of key personnel, spot checks on various facility conditions, identifying paperwork, permitting and recordkeeping issues and raising awareness among staff members.
  • Assist in preparing for Government Agency Inspection and response for scheduled government inspections, being on site during those inspections and assisting facility with return-to-compliance efforts and prepared written responses to issued Notice of Violations (NOVs).
  • Monitoring compliance with HMBP's (hazmat inventory, site map, training), SPCC contents (petroleum storage capacity figures, container locations, training) and AST's (tank inspections, along with professional engineering assessments when needed).
  • Maintain documentation associated with the annual status report submittals to the CA DA team and create analysis for legal team, as assigned. Prepare for meetings with DAs and outside counsel.
  • Provide training and awareness. Meet with new 605 Associates (Kmart) within 2-3 weeks of them being in the position. Meet with new District Managers from all business formats and coach them on what to look for during their store visits. Participate in district and regional meetings and conference call, when possible.
  • Provide assistance to facilities with compliance related to a number of non-CUPA regulatory authorities. Monitoring compliance with a number of regulated pieces of equipment, including emergency back-up generators, HVAC components, refrigeration systems, oil/water separators, fire suppression systems (during testing), fueling tanks, storm drains, etc. Handling required online submissions, permit applications and revisions, inspection preparation and response, etc.
  • Rideshare and Commute Reduction Programs - Assist facilities with compliance related to a number of city, county and regional Rideshare/Commute Reduction programs and regulations in various jurisdictions, including City of Burbank, SCAQMD, BAAQMD, Ventura County, Maricopa Co AZ, City of Portland OR Montgomery County, etc. Attend mandatory training and awareness meetings, report filings and agency audits as needed.
  • Assist in the store closing process. Visit closing facilities several times during the store closing process to inspect dumpsters and ensure ongoing compliance throughout the liquidation process. Meet with liquidator to ensure knowledge of CA specific regulations. Assist with the removal of sensitive and regulated items. Assist with various clean-ups and haul-aways.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Level Degree required
  • 5 or more years experience in SHC store operations, environmental compliance, including working knowledge of California laws/regulations surrounding compliance.
  • Strong computer skills required including but not limited to: excel and experience with managing intra and/or internet websites.
  • Proven ability to work independently with a high level of accuracy under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of people and to communicate with external constituencies including political staff and utility partners.
